Brown wins second Lobstick after very tough draw

Kim Brown may have had the tournament’s most difficult draw at the 2017 Conexus Ladies Lobstick, but that didn’t stop her for winning her second title in the last three years.

Brown needed to beat three past champions, including a pair of two-time champs to get her named etched on the Ladies Lobstick trophy once again.

In match play, Brown beat defending champion Abra Thompson in the opening round, then defeated in Dana Kidd (champion in 2000 and 1998) in the quarters and Kathy Ziglo (2014, 2012) in the semifinals to advance to the big dance.

Brown then beat Megan McKenzie in just 12 holes on Friday to win her second Lobstick title herself after doing so in 2015.

“At the start of the week, I saw how the draw fell and knew it wouldn’t be an easy path,” Brown said, who’s originally from Prince Albert but living in Saskatoon. “You just take it one day at a time and play each player as they come. In order to win, I guess you have to go through those good players anyway.”

In the finals, Brown was dominant and didn’t lose a hole at any point. She took control of the match early winning four of the first five holes on her way to the victory on the 12th.

“I started the week a little slow and I got better as the week went on. So I had some confidence coming into today,” Brown said. “It started off strong and I kind of went from there.”

It’s been a good season for Brown, who repeated as the Ladies Northern champion on June 5 at Cooke Municipal Golf Course.
