Armed robbery leads to chase, damaged police car

Aug 22, 2017 | 10:49 AM

A man accused of committing an early morning robbery remains in custody and is due to face a number of charges.

Yesterday morning, Aug. 21, at roughly 4 a.m. police were dispatched to a home on 1000 Block River Street West for an armed robbery.

According to a media release from the Prince Albert Police Service, two female victims told responding officers they gave a man they didn’t know a ride to an address in the city. While on the drive, the man brandished a knife and demanded for their wallets and the vehicle.

After exiting the vehicle, both women ran to a nearby home where they called police. The male left the scene in the stolen vehicle and travelled eastbound. Neither of the women were injured during the incident.

Later that afternoon, police located the vehicle on the 1400 block of 12 Street West. Officers saw an unknown man driving the vehicle with two female passengers. After turning on the lights and sirens, the driver ignored them and evaded police who did not pursue due to safety concerns.

Officers later spotted the vehicle a second time and pulled a patrol car in front of it to prevent it from leaving the scene. The driver of the stolen vehicle rammed the front of the police cruiser before fleeing and entering a nearby building through an open window.

Police deployed police service dog Daxa and arrested a 24-year-old man.

The man now faces several serious charges including theft of a motor vehicle, armed robbery, operating a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner, evading police, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, break and enter and breach of a court order.

He is due to make his first appearance in Prince Albert Provincial Court today.
