Sentencing for semi driver who caused the deaths of 3 teens

Aug 22, 2017 | 9:33 AM

Sentencing is expected today for the driver of a semi involved in a chain-reaction crash that killed three Carrot River teens in 2015.

Earlier this year, Normand Mark Joseph Lavoie, 40, pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving causing death.

Justin Gaja, 14, Kristian Skalicky, 15, and Carter Stevenson, 17, were on their way home from a football training camp May 3, 2015 when a semi rear-ended them in a construction zone near the village of Spalding, roughly 50 kilometres south of Melfort. The semi pushed their car into another vehicle, which then struck a flag operator. All three teens were killed in the crash and the 21-year-old flagger was seriously injured.

Lavoie, originally from Winnipeg, was charged in August of 2015 following a lengthy collision investigation by RCMP. Lavoie is expected to be sentenced today in Melfort’s Court of Queen’s Bench for three counts of dangerous driving causing death, as well as one count of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
