Astros and Aces with strong showings at nationals

Aug 14, 2017 | 5:00 PM

Three Prince Albert minor softball teams were in action over the weekend during Softball Canada events.

None of the three finished with medals, but the Prince Albert Under-16 Astros were the closest with their fourth place finish at the Under-16 Boys Canadian Fast Pitch Nationals in Cobourg, Ont.

The Astros were the second-ranked team after the round robin, as they carried a 5-1 record into the playoffs. But after a 4-1 loss to Tavistock Athletics from Ontario to start the playoffs, the Astros narrowly beat the Newfoundland Selects to advance to the bronze medal game. The Astros fell short of a medal finish with a 7-0 defeat to Ontario’s Belmore Sting.

Two Astros won individual awards for their standout performances.

Astros pitcher Darian Bellegrade-Cote was named as the Round Robin MVP. In 27 innings pitched, Bellegrade-Cote held a 1.04 ERA while striking out 62 batters. He also hit .385 at the plate.

Jett Amundson was named as the tournaments’ top first baseman, after hitting .375 with six runs scored and five runs batted in. Amundson was also one of three players in the tournament to hit a home run.

Under-16 Aces

The Prince Albert Under-16 Aces finished with a 2-4 record at the Under-16 Girls Canadian Fast Pitch Nationals in Delta, B.C.

They had an even record in their pair of playoff games, losing their opener 9-8 to the Red Deer Rage before a comfortable 7-1 victory over the Sherwood Park Storm.

Under-14 Astros

Although the Prince Albert Under-14 Astros ended up as a mid-table team with a 3-4 tournament record, they were the only Saskatchewan team to pick up a victory at the tournament in Palmerston, Ont. over the weekend. Teams from both Saskatoon and Waden went winless in six games. The Astros lost their lone playoff game 5-0 to the Tavistock Athletics.
