Southend man charged with manslaughter appears in P.A. court

Aug 3, 2017 | 2:00 PM

A young man facing a charge of manslaughter after a fight turned fatal in Pelican Narrows made his first appearance this morning in a Prince Albert courtroom.

Brennan Lee Cook, 22, from Southend, Sask., was charged following an incident in Pelican Narrows July 29. Officers from the Pelican Narrows RCMP detachment were called to a local business at roughly 4 p.m. for a complaint of a man in medical distress “after an altercation with another adult male.” The 25-year-old victim was airlifted to a Saskatoon hospital for treatment, but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The identity of the victim was not released by RCMP, though they did say he and Cook were known to each other.

Cook was arrested and charged without incident July 31 in Pelican Narrows. The RCMP said their investigation into the death is ongoing, and includes officers from their Prince Albert general investigation and forensic identification sections as well as the Office of the Chief Coroner. If found guilty of manslaughter, Cook may face life in prison.

His time in court this morning lasted only a few moments, which is typical of first appearances. The young man did not speak, and stood calmly behind the glass in the prisoner’s box with his arms folded, wearing the grey uniform of the Prince Albert Correctional Centre.

Defence lawyer Rebecca Crookshanks asked for the matter to be adjourned until Aug. 10 to give Cook an opportunity to secure representation from Legal Aid. Judge Stephen Carter granted the request, and remanded Cook to that date.

The allegations against Cook have not yet been tested by the courts.
