P.A. Astros member to play at nationals in Ontario

Aug 2, 2017 | 5:00 PM

A young softball player from Little Red River is playing for the Prince Albert Astros at nationals next week.

Dae Dae Dante Halkett first fell in love with the sport at eight-years-old, and ever since picking up a ball, he’s been hooked.

“I watched my dad when I was growing up and it made me want to play ball like him,” he said.

The now 13-year-old said in addition to learning softball skills, he has learned things like sportsmanship, team work, and most importantly, to just have fun.

Halkett made the team early this year. He will be travelling with 11 other athletes to compete at the National Fast Pitch Championship in Palmerston, Ont. The Astros won the silver at provincials and now get to represent Saskatchewan at nationals.

His dad, Josha said his son is one of only five Indigenous players on the team. He said nearly 30  players from all accross the province tried out, but under half were selected.

“I’m very proud of him,” he said.

The Astros will be going up against teams from all over the country from Monday, August 7 to Friday, August 11.

Dae Dae Dante said he hopes to one day play for the MLB.
