Team Sask. Canada Summer Games update

Jul 31, 2017 | 5:42 PM

There has only been two and a half days of competition so far at the Canada Summer Games, but there are already a number of Saskatchewan teams that have stood out and should be watched closely in the coming days.

Male Softball

The men’s softball team is 6-0 so far at the games, thanks to wins over Ontario, Alberta, Quebec, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

There is one division of 10 teams, so Saskatchewan still has games against B.C., New Brunswick, and P.E.I. to close out the round robin.

The playoff round begins on Thursday afternoon, with the top four teams from the round robin getting a crack at advancing to the gold medal game.

Men’s Basketball

The round-of-16 has already begun in men’s basketball and Saskatchewan is in a comfortable position, following round robin wins over Alberta and Yukon. Their elimination game in the round-of-16 on Monday afternoon caused no issues, as they rolled over the Northwest Territories 99-34.

They now advance to Tuesday’s quarter-finals against Team B.C., scheduled for 3 p.m. central time.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team rolled over Team Yukon on Sunday 6-0 in their tournament opener. They face Quebec on Monday at 4:30 p.m. central time, who beat Yukon 9-0 in their opener. Regardless of that result, they will play in the medal round on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. central time.

Baseball

Saskatchewan’s baseball team is currently tied for first in their division with Alberta, as both teams carry a 3-1 record so far. They will go head-to-head for the second time in the round robin on Monday night at 7 p.m. central time. Team Sask edged Alberta 3-2 in the first meeting on Saturday. They then finish up their round robin with a game against B.C. on Tuesday.

To make the playoffs, Saskatchewan just has to finish top three in their division of four teams. The quarter and semifinals are on Thursday.

Sailing – Para

Battleford native Joe Gerlinsky finished in second on day one in the Sailing 2.4 m Para Mix. There are five days in that category, as it will wrap up on Thursday.

Other Sask Results

Women’s Beach Volleyball

Marlene Hanbridge (Saskatoon) and Jordyn Thomas (Wilkie) lost their first match to Team B.C. in two sets, and then were on the wrong end of a close match against Quebec earlier on Monday, losing 15-8 in the third set. They play Alberta at 5 p.m. central time on Tuesday. They need to finish in the top three (of four teams) in their division to advance to the quarter-finals, which are on Wednesday.

Men’s Beach Volleyball

Daulton Sinoski (Prince Albert) and Patrick Hunchak (Saskatoon) are 1-1 so far after a win over Team Yukon and a loss to Team Ontario. They play at 6 p.m. central time on Monday against Team Manitoba, and then wrap up the round robin with Tuesday games against New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador.

They need to finish in the top three (of six teams) in their division to advance to the quarter-finals, which are on Wednesday.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball team fell in their first two round robin games against Quebec and then Mantioba, which solidified their quarter-final matchup against the pool B winners from Alberta, who won their games against Yukon and Nova Scotia. The elimination game is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. central time on Tuesday.
