Ten-year-old girls open impromptu iced tea stand to help SPCA

Jul 23, 2017 | 7:58 PM

As they sat in camping chairs under their colourful umbrella with a dog in hand, two 10-year-old friends were cooling people down while also warming their hearts.

Brooklynn Gregg and her friend Rachel stood on opposite ends of their driveway along Highway 2 south of Prince Albert, urging people to stop by their stand and purchase some iced tea, with all the funds raised going towards the SPCA.

“I like animals and I want to help animals at the SPCA, so I am raising money,” Gregg said. “I just want to help animals. Sometimes they can be really helpful.”

Despite not owning any pets of her own, Gregg’s mother Jaime Laughren says she has always had a passion for animals and that it “warmed her heart” to see her daughter come up with the idea and run with it. More so, as this was not the first time the young girl had presented the idea.

“She has done it before and raised about $100. She asked me if she could do it again and I said yeah,” Laughren said. “Absolutely proud. It is her passion and all her idea.”

Her friend Rachel helped in this last campaign, saying as long time friends, “it is just nice to help her out.”

“I have got to meet new people and they have just been donating,” Rachel smiled.

Some stopping through were so impressed with the young girl’s philanthropy, they were donating two or five dollars — well above the 25 cent asking price.

“It makes me feel good about society and that people are really nice,” Gregg added.

Though no goal in mind, after about four hours, the two had netted just under $19 and were eager to remain outside for a couple more hours Sunday afternoon.
