Windstorm causes serious damage in Wadin Bay

Two years ago campsites at Wadin Bay, north of La Ronge, were closed due to forest fire. Now, almost half of them are closed down again after a windstorm, mistaken by campers for a tornado, swept through their campsites on Sunday evening.

According to Deb Bigoraj who works for the park, the storm began just after 4 p.m. and lasted an hour. She said the wind was so heavy it was throwing trees on top of vehicles and campers. Those who felt unsafe in their trailers hopped in their vehicles and parked alongside a gravel road without nearby trees.

“When I drove to loop four it just shocked me. I didn’t expect all those trees to be down and on top of campers, and the roads were blocked. It was just a little bit hard to take,” she said.

A mother and three children were rescued from their trailer after a tree fell on top of it. Nobody was injured.
