Online fundraiser doubles goal for missing teen

People are offering support as the search continues for a missing teen.

Justin Warwaruk, 17, was last seen swimming in the South Saskatchewan River near the Fred Heal Canoe Launch on Sunday night.

Since then, searchers on land, in boats and in planes have been scouring the river for any signs of him.

Professional searchers have been joined by volunteers from Saskatoon Search and Rescue, as well as members of Warwaruk’s family and friends from his hometown of Outlook, Sask. 

A fundraising page set up on the youcaring.com crowdfunding platrform had reached over $20,000 by Wednesday morning, after starting with a $10,000 goal on Tuesday. Funds raised were meant to cover costs associated with the search, and to support Warwaruk’s family. Any extra money was to be donated to Search and Rescue.

With the Saskatoon Fire Department providing assistance in the search, Assistant Chief Wayne Rodger took a moment to urge people not to swim in the river.

“The conditions can change daily, even hourly. The conditions on the river bed are subject to that change just because of the softness of the sand and silt,” he said.
