Our House celebrates 10 years

Jul 12, 2017 | 4:20 PM

A local institution committed to helping those in crisis marked a milestone yesterday.

Over 100 people attended a free BBQ at Our House to celebrate 10 years of providing emergency accomodation to men and women in crisis.

Edna Bruce, Manager at the Our House building, said the shelter wouldn’t be where it is without the help of the community.

“People donate food and clothing to the shelter, it is wonderful. I can’t say enough good things about the people of Prince Albert for their donations and their kindness,” she said.

The adult shelter sleeps 30 people in the summer and 40 in the winter, but it provides more than just a place to sleep. It has a classroom where people can learn English, 24-hour client support staff, and activities to keep people busy.

According to Bruce, staff is trained to understand the needs of each individual in order to direct them to the appropriate resources, such as counselling or assistance accessing income and support housing.

“We just have a lot of broken people that need help,” she said.

Bruce said people who come in are asked to fill out a plan for what their future might be, and are given the support they need to stay on track. She said she has seen success with the program and is happy to see people building a better life for themselves.
