Waskesiu celebrating 25 years of kids

Jul 8, 2017 | 9:10 AM

The community of Waskesiu will soon be playing host to kids and their families for the 25 annual Waskesiu Children’s Festival on July 15.

Shannon Bond, communications officer for the Prince Albert National Park, said celebrating 25 years means an entire generation of kids have grown up coming to the park and taking part in the festival.

“It’s one of those events that’s really popular for people to come back to, time and time again. Although we are seeing a lot [of] newer families coming up to the park for the first time, who are discovering the festival,” Bond said. “We’re happy to have the chance to promote it with people so that a lot of these new visitors to the park can come up and enjoy it with the kids.”

All of the festival favourites are back for another year including face painting along with Indigenous art and games.

“We’re excited because ParticipACTION is sending a group to the festival and with them they’re bringing a balance surfboard, a kayak simulator and they will have field hockey going,” Bond said.

The festival will also feature a number of activity booths where kids can collect stamps in a passport. Bond said once the kids fill their passport they will get a half-price ticket to see a movie at the Twin Pines Cinema, which will be playing Cars 3 that weekend.

As part of the Canada 150, entry into the national park is free. Bond said with free entry, the hope is to see more families come out and participate.
