Canada 150: Celebrations around the region

Jun 30, 2017 | 2:00 PM

Canadians from coast to coast will be gathering in their communities Saturday to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

Here in Prince Albert, the celebrations actually kick off tonight in Kinsmen Park with four bands starting at 5 p.m. and fireworks to follow. The party continues Saturday afternoon, also in Kinsmen Park. The list of activities includes entertainment on the main stage, an expanded children’s area with a magician, bouncy castles, multicultural food vendors and more. The event wraps up with another fireworks display that night.

In Kinistino, a pancake breakfast gets underway July 1, 7 a.m. followed by a parade at 10:30 a.m. The day continues with a pasta supper at 5 p.m. and a street dance beginning at 8 p.m. Festivities, including a slow pitch tournament, continue Sunday. Fireworks will be set off in Kinistino at dusk, before a free family movie night.

People are encouraged to gather at Memorial Garden and Main St in Melfort at 3 p.m. on Saturday for an opening ceremony that includes Canada Day cake and coffee. Then, the Bortis Family and Friends band hits the stage along with a Sask Mini Express Show. In addition to street fair activities and a BBQ supper, the Saskatchewan Roughrider game will be live streamed in the Northern Lights Palace. Fireworks will follow at the Spruce Haven Ball Diamonds.

The community of Parkside is inviting people to their sports grounds for an afternoon of entertainment starting at 1 p.m.

Waskesiu Lake in Prince Albert National Park has a full weekend of activities including their annual Canada Day Parade down Waskesiu Dr. starting at noon.

Sunset Bay Resort at Emma Lake will have a fire works display on the beach around 10:30 p.m. or dusk.

Big River will launch their celebrations with a free fish fry starting at 5 p.m. tonight followed by a free family movie. A pancake breakfast kicks off at 7 a.m. Saturday morning at Settlement Square on Main St. Fireworks will go off at Cowan Lake at about 11 p.m.

Perhaps the biggest bash will be in the nations capital. Preparations are in full swing with upwards of 450,000 people descending on Parliament Hill for the massive event. Irish rockers U2 will headline the event. They’ll be joined by Gordon Lightfoot, Walk Off The Earth, Dean Brody and Serena Ryder.

Canadians around the world are also getting ready to celebrate at events taking place in Hong Kong, Seoul, Los Angeles and Dubai just to name a few. In London, a daylong party will be held in Trafalgar Square. In Sydney, Australia, 50 tonnes of snow will be brought in to create a “winter wonderland” theme at the Greenwood Hotel.
