Alleged domestic abuser denied bail

Jun 26, 2017 | 5:25 PM

A man accused of committing his third assault against the same woman was denied release on bail this morning by a Prince Albert judge.

Tyler Hansen, 33, was arrested outside a 12th St. E. apartment June 9 after a tenant complained about a man beating up a woman in the parking lot and kicking in an apartment window. Crown Prosecutor Linh Le said Hansen tried to flee, but was taken into custody after he injured his leg in the process of jumping over nearby fences.

Hansen, who appeared over video link from Prince Albert Correctional Centre, used crutches to assist him as he entered the video courtroom.

The victim of the alleged assault gave a statement to police the next day, Le said. The victim told police her boyfriend Hansen had grabbed her by the collar and thrown her to the ground in an inebriated rage while shouting about infidelity. Although the victim was uninjured by the alleged assault, Le told the court that Hansen received a six-month conditional sentence for assaulting the same victim in 2015, and in 2016 he assaulted her again causing bodily harm and leading to a 15-month jail sentence.

Hansen’s defence lawyer Rebecca Crookshanks said Hansen, an unemployed pipeline worker, tried to turn himself in after his victim filed the assault complaint, and has already made arrangements to pay for the damaged window. Crookshanks said the victim has contacted her saying she no longer wants to go ahead with the charges, because Hansen provides her and their children with needed financial and caregiving support.

“We see this fairly often with domestic violence victims,” Le said. “This is a cycle of abuse.”

Judge Marylynne Beaton, a veteran of Saskatchewan family court, said she was “quite aware of the dynamics of family violence” and was unwilling to take a chance on releasing him before trial.

“I am not willing to take a risk on Mr. Hansen… He has twice assaulted the same victim,” she said. “Bail is denied.”

None of the allegations have been proven in court.
