Even as the rain began to fall, racers took their marks at Prince Albert’s largest running event.

Upwards of 450 participants lined the Rotary Trail Saturday for the 13th annual Summit Run, each prepared to take on a 2K, 5K, 10K or half-marathon trek.

“We have a fantastic local representation and we have people from Saskatoon and Regina. This year and we even have two international participants,” Lisa Evans, race director said. “It is a great avenue for people to be active in the community and it is a great way for people who have goals to come, finish the run and we can help them celebrate that.”

The race was strictly for fun and brought together runners and walkers of all ages. The event is held not only to promote outdoor activity and athletics but works to raise funds to complete the Rotary Trail.

Evans said the trail was one of Prince Albert’s best assets and was a great way to promote keeping active in the city. She said there was a “fantastic running community” in P.A.

“You find at races there is a real camaraderie of people here cheering each other on as they pass each other,” she said.

The race attracts everyone from veteran runners and those just looking for a fun way to stay fit.

This was true for Ginelle Olsen and her daughter who were both attending their first Summit Run. Olsen was taking on a five-kilometre run while her daughter was tackling 21. The two had been training together for sometimes and were eager to attend the event.

“The run promotes fitness and health and it is for a good cause to upkeep the trail which gets people outside,” Olsen said.

Over the past dozen years, the run has donated over $96,000 to local initiatives.
