Inaugural Bush Rush competition kicks off in La Ronge

Jun 16, 2017 | 2:00 PM

Residents in the North have a new competition to push them to the limits.

The tri-communities of La Ronge, Air Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band will play host to a brand new event this weekend.

The first ever Bush Rush ultimate challenge spans five kilometers and features 14 obstacles for individuals, or teams of two to tackle.

“We just wanted to host an event for the people in town, something unique,” race coordinator Dionne Tatlow said. “[Coordinator] Travis [Hegland] is retired military, and he’s the current fitness coordinator for [JRMCC]… he’s well versed in obstacle races and Spartan races.”

She said the obstacles are designed to push people to their limits, and consist of wall climbs, log carries, rope climbing among other obstacles.

The race registration runs until 10:30 a.m. when the race briefing begins on June 17, with the race kicking off half an hour later at Patterson Park in La Ronge and wraps up at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre Hall. Following the race, a gathering will be hosted at the centre.

Tatlow said so far, a wide variety of people have registered to participate in the race.

She said the race is mostly for bragging rights.

“We have awesome race packages and a few prizes for the winners,” Tatlow said. “We’re really excited it’s bringing the three communities together.”
