No bail for P.A. suspect arrested with meth, knife

Jun 15, 2017 | 2:00 PM

A man allegedly caught out after his curfew with methamphetamine, marijuana and a knife was denied bail this morning by a Prince Albert judge.

Scott Richard Simpson, 32, was previously released from custody on an undertaking after he was allegedly found in possession of a stolen SUV. His release conditions included a nightly curfew from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and a promise not to possess or consume any non-prescribed drugs.

Crown prosecutor Lihn Le said city police were dispatched to Movado’s Sports Bar just before 4 a.m. June 14 after an alarm sounded. She said police discovered Simpson nearby and arrested him because the officers were aware of his curfew. Police located a folding pocket knife on his person, Le said, along with a 1.4-gram baggie of meth and two glass pipes concealed in a cigarette pack. Arresting officers also allegedly found a second baggie on Simpson containing 0.2 grams of marijuana.

“He was not home for his curfew, and when he was located he was found with weapons and drugs,” Le said.

Simpson’s lawyer Robert Rooney downplayed the seriousness of the knife, saying it was so small it could hardly be called a weapon. Simpson works in roofing and renovation, he said, and uses the knife as a tool of his trade. Rooney emphasized the small quantities of the drugs seized, and said Simpson missed his curfew to avoid a party which had started at his court-approved residence.

Provincial Court Judge Felicia Daunt denied Simpson’s release after hearing arguments from both sides. She said Simpson has shown “a history of failing to comply,” as well as an “unaddressed drug habit.”

When he learned his release was denied, Simpson attempted to argue his case with Daunt directly. Simpson told the court he has been attending treatment with Addictions Services, and said Daunt had not heard all the points he wanted Rooney to raise during the bail hearing.

“That’s kind of too bad,” Daunt said.

Simpson will be back in court next week. The allegations against him have not been tested before the courts.
