A 32-seed doesn’t often beat the top ranked player in any given Conexus Men’s Lobstick tournament, but that’s exactly what happened on Wednesday.
Prince Albert youngster Cory Sawchuk, the 32nd ranked player in the Championship Flight, upended the No. 1 player Tyler Zaba in the opening match play round on Wednesday. Sawchuk well take on Kelly Robson in round two.
In fact, it was a day of upsets. The 4-seed Shaun Dunphy was upended in the opening round by Jason Galon, as was the fifth-ranked Warren Gnam by Liam Courtney.
The second-ranked Danny Klughart, also from Prince Albert, beat Brad Phelps in the opening round. He takes on Ryan Timmerman in the second round.
