Melfort revving up for annual car show

Jun 1, 2017 | 2:00 PM

One of Melfort’s biggest events is back for another year. The 28th annual XFM Melfort Show n’ Shine brought to you by the Melfort and District Chamber of Commerce will take place on June 16.

Nicole Gagne, executive director of the chamber, said the event will take place on Main Street and will feature a couple hundred vehicles like cars, trucks, hot rods and bikes. Gagne said the show is free for the community to attend and it’s only $10 to register a car.

“[The show] is the second largest event held in the city, only second to the Melfort Exhibition. Over the last five year’s [our attendance] has almost doubled,” Gagne said.

She said roughly a couple thousand people attend the event, which also features food vendors, children’s activities and contests. Something new this year will be demonstrations from the North East Offroaders Association.

There are no restrictions on what kind of vehicle can register for the event. There will be awards presented for best year, best model and the president’s choice award.

Gagne said if the weather is bad there’s not much organizers can do about it as the show is an outdoor event.

“The reality of it is, a lot of these car owners won’t even travel with their vehicles, they won’t get them wet and dirty because they’ve put so much money into these,” she said.

The event will kick off with a barbecue at Riverside Melfort Chrysler from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the car show to follow from 3 p.m. to midnight.
