Saturday gas leak capped, repaired

May 20, 2017 | 2:32 PM

UPDATE; The gas leaking from the pipe has been turned off and repair work has been completed.

SaskEnergy, police and fire crews responded Saturday afternoon to an above ground natural gas leak at a home on 8 St. East and 10 Avenue East.

The damage occurred by a third party to a pipe that connects to a metre on a home. A handful of nearby houses were evacuated, though a spokesperson for the company said the situation is under control.

Though gas is still blowing from the pipe and can be smelled downwind, there is no safety concern.

“When gas is blowing, that means it is blowing up into the atmosphere and not going underground where it can be unsafe,” spokesperson Vanessa Gooliaff-Beaupre said.

Service technicians are on site and construction crews from Saskatoon are en route. The location of the damage has created a more complicated repair but is expected to be complete in the coming hours.

Resident Alfred Ray who lives in a neighbouring home said the gas smell was a “rude awakening this morning.”

“[The] neighbours came and told us to bounce, so we all took off,” Ray said, as he and his young family left the area. “But everything is okay. Just happy everyone is safe.”

Residents are asked to avoid the area.
