A group of dedicated volunteers are working hard to ensure animals in northern Saskatchewan have a safe place to go.

The Northeast SPCA is working diligently to raise funds needed to build itself a building in Melfort.

Pat Rumberger is helping to organize a golf tournament fundraiser on June 4 at the Melfort Golf and Country Club. She said this is the first time the group has tried a golf tournament and are hoping to receive some community support as the tournament is for a SPCA that will be utilized by the northeast region.

The goal is to raise at least $1,000 for the building fund. The group is getting closer to breaking ground this summer or sometime in the fall as they are over halfway to their goal of $500,000.

Currently, the group taking quotes from contractors in the northeast to help with various parts of the building including plumbing, electrical and gravel work.

Rumberger said the Northeast SPCA would help cover a large area of and will benefit a lot of animals in need.

“There is definitely a need for it…we’re very high on strays dropped off in Melfort and other communities. I know one summer I found nine dogs wandering the town and had to either find their owners or have them sent to another rescue group elsewhere,” Rumberger said.

Anyone interested in helping out can contact the organization through their website.

The golf tournament on June 4 will have a shotgun start at 12 p.m. with registration beginning at 11 a.m. Anyone interested in registering can contact the Melfort Golf and Country Club.
