Canada 150 brings canoes to Batoche

May 15, 2017 | 10:25 AM

The Batoche National Historic Site will participate in Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations by including new services and free admission.

On May 22, the landmark will open for the 2017 visiting season. To “experience the outdoors and Canada’s rich heritage,” canoe rentals will be offered on site for the first time ever to explore the South Saskatchewan River.

“National historic sites, and marine conservation areas represent the very best that Canada has to offer and tells stories of who we are, including the history, culture and contributions of Indigenous peoples,” Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catharine McKenna said.

This year, the Louis Riel Relay has combined with the annual Kidfest events. The relay is both competitive and recreational, as Kidfest features a petting zoo along with traditional games and live music. Both events take place July 8.

From August 19 to 20, Batoche is offering a Learn-to-Camp program. The educational program includes workshops related to camping skills like setting up a tent and cooking.

“It’s actually an overnight,” Lisa Luty, public relations with Parks Canada said. “People come and they don’t have to bring any equipment except a sleeping bag, pillow and clothes. All the food is provided, all the equipment is provided.”

Admission is free to all national parks across the country with a Parks Canada 2017 Discovery Pass. Services such as firewood, fishing permits and overnight backcountry use are additional costs.
