Ertman gets Canada Cup gold, all set for provincials

This past weekend, Prince Albert gymnast Brent Ertman added to an already deep gold mine of medals.

Ertman picked up his newest gold at the Canada Cup international competition May 5 to 7 in Calgary, finishing first in the double-mini trampoline in the Level 6 Espoir 18+ division.

“It felt really good. I went into the competition not really sure how I was going to do,” Ertman said. “It was my biggest competition of the season. There were nerves and I wasn’t really sure. I definitely didn’t expect that I was going to win first place.

“But when you go out there and give it your all, the best results show.”

He also finished fourth in tumbling in the Level 5 16+ category. Although it’s one place out of the medals, Ertman was excited with the finish as he added new wrinkles into his tumbling routine.

“I’m really, really happy with the outcome of fourth place. I really pushed myself,” Ertman said. “I could have watered it down with an easier skill and maybe gotten second or third, who knows? But I pushed myself and tried that new skill and I’m really glad I came out with fourth place.”

The Canada Cup is nothing new to Ertman. This was his fourth appearance at the competition and second time in Calgary.

Now 18-years-old and out of high school, this has allowed him to put more attention and energy into his craft.

“This season has been going really good. It’s helped me being out of school and focusing only on the gym,” Ertman said. “I’m progressing and not being as tired going to the gym after a full day at school, I’ve felt a lot of improvement this year. I can’t wait for provincials this weekend and nationals in July.”

The Gym Sask Provincial Championships are going on Friday through Sunday in Saskatoon.
