Community grants for P.A. help celebrate Canada’s 150

May 11, 2017 | 5:00 PM

Canada will turn 150 this July and the federal government is looking for local projects to help celebrate.

“What [the community fund] has done is engage the Community Foundations in Canada to work with other groups in the community to develop various projects that will celebrate Canada’s 150,” Marilyn Peterson, executive director of the Prince Albert and Area Community Foundation (PAACF) said.

Eligible projects can include everything from special celebrations for Canada Day, work to develop museums or other historical displays in the community, funding research and writing into a book about the community, or anything reflecting the last 150 years.

Peterson said groups can bring the PAACF their project ideas. The foundation will then submit the applications it feels are the best to the Canada 150 Fund.

“This is a chance for people to be creative, to really be creative and let their imagination go and present us with the idea that comes up,” Peterson said.

The Canada 150 fund will match money raised from local community foundations. Peterson said the matching doesn’t have to be through just money, it can be through things like a venue donation, volunteer hours or equipment.

The deadline for this second round of applications is June 15. The first round of applications happened in the fall. Peterson said the foundation has one grant application currently filed and that project will be announced in a few weeks.

Applications for the grants can be found online
