Special election called for Little Red River

May 4, 2017 | 8:00 AM

Little Red River Reserve is going back to the polls on Friday.

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band gave notice of a special election this week after the March results were appealed due to alleged irregularities.

Five candidates will be running for the two councillor positions when the polls open at 9 a.m. David Charles has decided to not run this time around.

Polling stations will be posted in Little Red River’s White Hall, at the Prince Albert Inn’s Waskesiu room and in the Ramada Hotel Manitoba room in Saskatoon.

Only those eligible to vote on March 31 will be able to vote in this special election. Those who chose to vote for Stanley Mission or La Ronge are not eligible to vote. The chief electoral officer will count all the ballots for council at Little Red River Reserve. Once all the ballots are counted, the officer will announce the winners.

Keith Mirasty won the election in March with 123 votes. His closest rival was Tracey Halkett who narrowly beat out Angus Mirasty by six votes.

The other two candidates running are Blanche Mirasty and Mary Bighead. Both received 33 and 32 votes, respectfully.

A total of 239 votes were cast at Little Red River’s polling station. Four ballots were considered spoiled. The next busiest station was in Prince Albert, which saw 93 ballots cast.

Polling stations close at 6 p.m.
