Paramedics, firefighters hold friendly competition for McHappy Day

May 4, 2017 | 8:00 AM

While every May 3 might be McHappy Days, a McDonald’s charity drive to support Ronald McDonald House, the date also marks an annual competition between Prince Albert emergency service workers.

For the past seven years, Parkland Ambulance and Prince Albert Fire Department staff have spent the day washing car windows in the McDonald’s drive-thru and collecting donations for Ronald McDonald House charities. The money raised is used to support families of sick children by providing a place to stay while their child is treated at a nearby hospital.

Parkland paramedics were scrubbing for the cause at the Cornerstone McDonald’s location.

“We kind of put on a little friendly competition against the firefighters to see who raises the most money,” Paramedic Chris Pacey said. “It’s always friendly, and it’s for the right cause.”

Meanwhile, the firefighters were washing away at the Second Ave. W. McDonald’s location.

Firefighter David MacAuley said the city’s firefighters hope to continue their winning streak this year.

“In the past we’ve done pretty good,” MacAuley said. “It’s usually pretty tight, but in the past we’ve come out the victor so I’m hoping this year we can do it again.”

Although the competition is always fun, MacAuley said the real winners are always the kids and families who benefit from the donations.

“It’s all about the kids,” he said. “That’s what we’re here for, and we want to raise as much money for them as we can.”

MacAuley said the day was a great success so far, and thanked McDonald’s for hosting and all the members of the public who donated.
