The rejuvenation of a long-time Prince Albert event was marked with a prestigious honour: the Prince Albert Winter Festival was awarded the Tourism Award at the 27th Annual Samuel McLeod Business Awards.

Winter Festival President, Barry Mihilewicz, said it was an honour to accept the award on behalf of all of the volunteers who have contributed to the festival over the years.

“We worked hard to rejuvenate the event and make it something more relevant for today. So, to be recognized for that is awesome,” he said.

The annual awards celebrated the best in local business in 11 categories. Bryan Rindal of BTR Financial Planning received the award for Male Business Leader of the Year.

Rindal got his start in the business in 1986 and his company will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

“It’s nice to be recognized for the work that you do,” he said. “You put your heart and soul into your business and help your clients and give back to the community, so it’s nice to be recognized.”

The awards are named after Samuel McLeod, one of Prince Albert’s early settlers and entrepreneurs. The Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce said nominees are chosen based on their entrepreneurship, civic leadership and pioneering spirit.

Patricia Weir of Lawton Partners was named Female Business Leader of the Year. Gene’s Cycle & Sports received the Business Transformation Award. Prince Albert Habitat for Humanity was recognized with the Non-Profit Organization Award. Downtown eatery The Rusty Owl received the New Venture Award. Mr. Mikes Steakhouse Casual took home the Community Involvement Award while Travelodge Prince Albert accepted the Service Award. The Marketing Award went to Gateway Mall. Whitney Darchuk of Pure Athletics was named Young Entrepreneur of the Year and the Business of the Year was awarded to Redhead Equipment.
