Fighting fire with fire

Don’t be alarmed if you see smoke over the next several days; Prince Albert firefighters will be igniting small fires throughout the city in hopes of preventing bigger ones.

Controlled burns will take place in various parts of the city throughout the next several weeks. Crews will be at Little Red River park on Friday, April 28.

The city said controlled burns are used as a way to lessen the chance of grass fires by clearing out high hazard areas identified on a priority basis.    

Meanwhile, Inspector Dave Davies said it is getting to be the time of year residents will be enjoying backyard fire pits. 

The Fire and Emergency Services Bylaw sets out a number of requirements for fire pits. For example, it has to have a heavy screen covering with openings not exceeding 13 mm or .5 inches and only seasonal firewood is allowed to be burned. A few different rules apply to portable fire pits and chimneys. For instance, they cannot be used on wood decks or on apartment balconies.
