Local woman donates prize to food shelter

When Kayla Demorest found out she won a $1500 prize package in a local contest, spreading her new fortune was an easy decision.

“I decided to give back to the Prince Albert food bank because I heard about the possibility of them shutting down and knew there was a need,” Demorest told paNOW.

She entered a contest sponsored by Faithlife Financial. Demorest received a $500 pre-paid VISA, a $500 contribution to a tax-free savings account and a $500 donation to the charity of her choice.

“That’s a part of who we are,” said Faith Life Financial representative, Bryan Moriarty. “We believe in giving back and strengthening communities and that’s what makes us different.”

Demorest made the donation in honour of her best friend’s sister, Rebeca Durand, 16, who passed away in an accident on the Shellbrook highway in January.

“My sister always wanted to give back to other people,” said Cory Durand. “Even when she was little, she told me if she won the lottery she would give the money to people in need. This was so nice of Kayla to do this in her honor.”

Statistics show the number of people using the local food bank is growing. All the money donated by Demorest will go towards purchasing food for clients.
