YWCA finds much sought after space in P.A. church

Mar 30, 2017 | 2:00 PM

After spending years looking for space to expand its programs, the Prince Albert YWCA has finally found that space. The women’s organization came to an agreement with the Wesley United Church to purchase the building and take it over this July.

Donna Brooks, CEO of the YWCA, said the organization needed more space because in the last 10 years its programs have expanded.

“We’ve been on the lookout for space but have never really found a suitable property. At the same time we’re looking for space, Wesley United had found their congregation shrinking …so they approached us to see if we were interested in working out with the church,” Brooks said.

The YWCA found the space would work for what the organization needed. The YWCA than made an offer which the church accepted.

“As part of that offer, Wesley United will still be able to have their services there at least until June of 2018. At that time we’ll talk about it and see what to do about it to move forward,” Brooks said.

The first programs to move into the church will be the settlement service program and English classes, both geared towards new Canadians. Brooks said the acquisition of the church will eventually allow the YWCA to not only add more programs, but current programs to grow. She said having a number of programs under one roof allows for participant convenience.

Brooks said there are some renovations that will need to be done, but the YWCA is looking forward to moving into the building and working with Wesley United.
