City, police honour gender diversity

Mar 27, 2017 | 5:00 PM

Gender Diversity Awareness Week is not only marked by a new flag flying high at city hall; it is also flying at the Prince Albert Police Services detachment for the first time.

“We want the LGBTQ community to know we are there to support them,” Police Chief Troy Cooper said in a media release. “The police service has a responsibility to them that is tied to the protection of human rights.”

A transgender flag will be flying high over the police detachment until April 1.

A flag has also been raised at the city hall building in downtown Prince Albert for the fourth year.

Jennifer Brockman, an organizer with the Prince Albert Pride Week committee said it means a lot to have the flags flying over public buildings.

“We’re getting more and more support, and that’s really beautiful to see,” Brockman said. “It’s really great to see; to have the transgender flag at the city police station for the week is just an incredible way to support our community and for people to know that they’re safe to go there.”

Brockman said she’s taken notice of the change of attitude in Prince Albert over the last four years.

“Often the gender diverse community feels alone; when they see that symbol then they know they’re not alone and the support is there,” Brockman said. “The support is growing… they know it’s there and that’s what’s important, is to feel supported.”

Prince Albert – Northcote MLA Nicole Rancourt was unable to attend the flag raising in person, but she sent a long a letter of support to Brockman. Brockman said the YWCA, Moose Jaw Pride, the Prairie Pride Network and the John M. Cuelenaere library have all helped make this week’s events possible.
