UPDATE: Woman rescued from river Saturday

Mar 26, 2017 | 12:44 PM

UPDATE: Prince Albert Police said the woman rescued from the river Saturday was not arrested following the incident, but was left in the care of family members.

Police Spokesperson Sgt. Travis Willie said police were called to the river and spoke with the 20-year-old female who was out on the ice. Willie said she was uncooperative, and the fire department was called to assist with the rescue operation.

The reason the woman was on the river in the first place is still unclear.

Prince Albert Fire Department (PAFD) was involved in a rescue last night on the North Saskatchewan River.

PAFD staff confirmed members were called to the area under the Diefenbaker Bridge at approximately 7 p.m. to assist Prince Albert Police Service after a woman ventured out onto the icy river. Firefighters wearing immersion suits and tethered to shore walked approximately 100 feet out onto the ice and brought the woman back to shore in an inflatable lifeboat.

The woman was reportedly taken into custody by police following the incident. PAFD could not comment on her current condition, or the reason why she was on the river.
