City offers businesses online succession training

Good succession planning could help save more businesses in Prince Albert.

That’s according to John Guenther, the city’s director of planning and development services, who is helping to launch a series of online workshops for businesses called webinars. There will be a total of 15 free webinars for businesses to take part in throughout the year.

The sessions are being run by Succession Matching Community Project.

Guenther said the webinars are intended to help businesses who are undergoing changing such as organizational or possibly selling. He said one of the goals of the webinars is to teach succession planning when a business sells so that it can stay open.

“That pass off is pretty critical and crucial element to sustaining a business over time,” he said. “A lot of people are aging and that aging component in a business environment can be pretty traumatic as far as sustaining a business over a time.”

He said without a succession plan, businesses might also be forced to sell for less or simply go out of business. He explained a lot of emotion is involved with a sale, which is what the webinar tries to help owners through.

City isn’t paying to host the webinars but are being offered for free by Succession Matching.

Guenther believes there’s enough interest to warrant the webinars.
