Basketball fans had no shortage of action over the weekend.

Senior boys 5A basketball teams from across the province came together at Carlton Comprehensive High School Friday and Saturday to compete for a spot at Hoopla, the provincial finals held in Regina.

“There’s seven teams here from across the province, all competing for two spots at provincials next weekend,” Carlton Coach Tim Strom said. “It’s been great to host.”

In the first round of games Friday Carlton fell to Yorkton Regional 76-42, while St. Mary won 63-51 over Balgonie and Estevan defeated Swift Current 69-65. On Saturday North Battleford Comprehensive beat Estevan 72-62 and Yorkton claimed the win over St. Mary 71-50 to secure a spot in the finals.

The final game was one of the closest in the series, ending with North Battleford taking the win over Yorkton 67-62. Both teams will advance to the provincial finals.

The Carlton girls’ squad was also in action over the weekend. The girls travelled to Estevan where they took the gold in the girls’ 5A regional tournament. After winning 68-54 over Swift Current, the girls defeated Estevan 69-53 to claim the top spot.

“They’re going to Hoopla,” Strom said. “The finals game in regionals just determines the seeding order.”

Also going to Hoopla March 24 and 25 are St. Brieux in 2-A boys, Birch Hills in 3-A boys, Melfort in 4-A girls and Kinistino in 2-A girls.
