National cupcake fundraiser benefits SPCA

Mar 4, 2017 | 7:01 AM

A national campaign aimed to help humane societies and shelters across Canada wrapped up Feb 27.

National Cupcake Day is a yearly fundraiser for Canada’s many animal shelters, and this year Prince Albert’s SPCA took part.

The campaign has shelters sell cupcakes and goodies for donations, with all of the funds raised going towards the local shelters.

The Prince Albert SPCA hosted a number of events at Gateway Mall, with several schools and businesses also taking part.

Liana Maloney, manager of operations for the SPCA, said the event raised around $2,500, exceeding their initial goal of $2,000. The cupcakes were sold for just $2, but Maloney said the donations added up quickly.

“[The funds] are going directly to the care of the animals, but most of it will be going towards spaying and neutering, especially of the cats,” Maloney said.

She said the event helped bring the community together and let people know what’s going on with the SPCA.

“Not everyone understands just how much it costs to look after these guys and get them out in the community healthy and spayed and neutered,” Maloney said.
