Red Earth Cree Nation membership heading to elections

It’s election season in the Red Earth Cree Nation.

Nomination meetings were hosted in Red Earth on February 24, where candidates for chief and council were announced.

Wendell Head, the chief electoral officer said those looking to cast their ballots must be at least 18 years of age and members of the Red Earth Cree Nation.

According to Head, band membership will be able to cast their votes in advanced polls set up in Nipawin at the Oasis Center. Polling stations have already been set up in Saskatoon and Prince Albert as well as Red Earth.

General elections are set to be hosted at the Mamawe Hall in Red Earth.

Once all of the votes have been cast, they will be counted on Friday, March 3. The counting of ballots will be done publically and manually, beginning at 9 a.m.

A total of 18 candidates are vying for elected positions. Once elected they will sit three-year terms according to the Red Earth Cree Nation Election Code.

Running for the chief position are Fabian Head, Miller Nawakayas, Roy Head and Helen Mcdermont.

Candidates running for four council spots are Hilliard Umpherville, Ferlin Nawakayas, Kirk McKay, Ryan Young, Charlie McKay, Zachary Whitecap, Charlene Head, Hendrick Head, Curits McKay, Harvey Nawakayas, Robert Whitecap, Cyril C. Head, Wilbert Head and Philip C. Head.
