Wakaw tries to hook TV investors

Oct 21, 2010 | 5:06 PM

The town of Wakaw could be featured on CBC Television.

Dragons Den is a television show where aspiring entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to a panel, who decides if the idea is worth investing in or not.

In April, town officials made their pitch to the Dragons during a taping in Toronto.

Their proposal was a $20 million commercial and residential development.

The project calls for a one-kilometre canal linking the town with nearby Wakaw Lake. It also calls for 350 residential lots, the construction of a 200 boat marina and a golf course.

“It’s a pretty novel idea. If you look at the location of Wakaw, you know one third of the province is within an hour and everybody is after lake property,” said Ed Kidd, mayor of Wakaw.

Kidd admits the whole experience was exciting.

“The way you have to wander down the stairs and stand in front of them. The heart raced for a minute or two,” he said.

Kidd is under a confidentiality agreement, meaning he can’t say whether the town’s pitch was successful until the episode goes to air.

“We have no idea (when it will air). In fact they don’t even tell us it’s going to be aired for sure,” Kidd said.

“They give us one week notice and then we’re hoping to let everyone know. Everybody wants to see if we’re on the show.”

Dragons Den airs Wednesdays on CBC at 8 p.m.
