Armed suspect arrested after evading police dog

Feb 27, 2017 | 12:53 PM

An armed suspect led Prince Albert Police officers on a wild chase early Sunday morning.

Shortly after 2 a.m., Sunday, on Nineth Ave. W. near River St., patrol officers spotted a four-door which matched a description of a vehicle of interest. When officers stopped the vehicle, a male suspect fled on foot carrying a sawed-off rifle.

Police gave chase, and deployed service dog Daxa to assist. Daxa engaged the suspect several times, but she was unable to stop him. The suspect managed to flee in the same car he was pulled over in.

Officers eventually contained and stopped the vehicle. The male suspect, a female driver and a female passenger were all arrested. The male suspect, a 25-year-old Prince Albert man, was charged with resisting arrest and several firearms-related offences. He is expected to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court today.

Police also recovered the sawed-off .22 rifle, which the suspect dropped during the foot chase.

P.A. police are also asking for the public’s help to locate an armed robber.

Officers responded to a robbery in progress call at a business in the 2700-block of Second Ave W. just after 1 a.m. Saturday. Upon their arrival, the suspect had already fled.

Police said a lone male suspect threatened a store worker with “a small weapon” before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash and lottery tickets. The suspect wore a black hooded sweater, blue jeans and brown boots.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to contact Prince Albert Police or Crime Stoppers.
