Local writer to be inducted into Women’s Hall of Fame

Feb 25, 2017 | 11:00 AM

A Prince Albert writer has been honoured by the P.A. Council of Women.

Lynda Monahan was recently named as the 2017 Women’s Hall of Fame inductee for her continued support of writers and literacy in the community.

Monahan said she was thrilled and honoured the council would consider her for induction.

“When [the council] came down to the library to present me with a bouquet of flowers and tell me that I was being inducted … I was flabbergasted,” Monahan said. “I was working with another writer and I thought they’d come to see her.”

Monahan said she has been writing for most of her life with three books to her name and a fourth manuscript on the way.

“Writing has always been my survival, the way I best express myself,” Monahan said. “I found that sharing my passion and great love for writing with others was as important to me as my own writing.”

Monahan said she always looks for opportunities to get herself out in the community, and recently finished a two year term as hospital writer at the Victoria Hospital following a year of volunteering.

“I just really enjoy working with people and helping them see the value of writing,” Monahan said.

Monahan currently helps facilitate a number of writing workshops through the Prince Albert Youth Outreach Program and the Pine Grove Correctional Institute, and also works with adults who have acquired brain injuries. Monahan said she enjoys helping people who may be marginalized and don’t have an opportunity to have their voices heard, and said she gets as much out of her projects as she ever gives.

“I’ve met some amazing people who have important stories to tell. I’ve said this before, I often feel like a midwife to other writers,” Monahan said. “When I see the joy that they have in being able to express themselves, I get that same joy back twofold.”

Monahan currently works at the John M. Cuelenaere Public Library, where she works with writers in the community to help improve their work and provide direction.

This summer, Monahan will be hosting the Sage Hill Teen Writing Experience at the library for the fourth time.

“We have a week where we work on teen’s writing,” Monahan said, “and we just don’t stay stuck in the library. We get outside and write by the riverbank and we do tours of the museum and all kinds of things.”

Monahan’s induction ceremony will take place March 12 at the Prince Albert Travelodge at 2 p.m.
