Big wins for Mintos, Northern Bears

The Prince Albert Mintos head into the playoffs as the hottest team Saskatchewan Midget AAA hockey.

They recorded a 3-2 win over Yorkton at the Art Hauser Centre to close out the season on a 10 game winning streak.

Kyrell Sopotyk scored the winning goal with less than four minutes remaining in the third period as the Mintos battled back from an early 2-1 deficit.

Sopotyk also assisted on Cael Zimmerman’s first period marker with Brayden Schneider rounding out the Prince Albert scoring. The Mintos finished the 44-game regular season with a record of 28-15-0-1.

The best of five quarterfinals are likely to start next week.

Meanwhile, the Prince Albert Northern Bears opened their Saskatchewan Midget Girls AAA weekend doubleheader with a 13-0 win over Weyburn.

Kate Wagner and Ireland South paced the Prince Albert attack with two goals each as the Northern Bears erupted, scoring eight times in the first period. 

They outshot the Southern Range Gold Wings 51-9 to raise their record to 17-6-4. 

The Northern Bears close out the weekend doubleheader against winless Weyburn in Prince Albert on Sunday afternoon. Opening face-off at the Art Hauser Centre is at 1 o’clock.
