Scott sensational as Raiders bounce Brandon 4-1

Feb 18, 2017 | 11:03 PM

Hard work, secondary scoring and great goaltending were the ingredients for victory as the Prince Albert Raiders posted a 4-1 win in Brandon.

Austin Crossley opened the scoring just past the five minute mark after a mad scramble in front of the Wheat King net. The 17-year-old defenseman sniped the first goal of his WHL career followed by an unassisted marker by fellow 17-year-old rearguard Brayden Pachal seven minutes later.

D-Jay Jerome who helped create the havoc that set up Crossley’s goal, extended the lead to 3-0 in the late stages of the second period on a pass from behind the Brandon net that went in off the skate of Wheat King goalie Travis Child. It took a video review to confirm the goal as the puck barely got over the goal line and was initially waved off by the referee behind the net.

Associate coach Dave Manson told the 900 CKBI post game show audience secondary scoring was crucial.

“When you get secondary scoring your chances of victory increase dramatically.” said Manson who added that’s especially the case on the road. “It takes the pressure off the top two lines as they are often hard matched against the other team’s top defensemen on the road.”

Ian Scott responded to his first start in four games with a stellar 33 save performance. The 17-year-old who is very high on NHL scouts radar screens robbed Brandon captain and fellow highly ranked prospect Nolan Patrick twice on the same shift early in the first period with the game scoreless. Scott saved his best stop for the third period with the Raiders leading 3-1.

Scott scrambled across the net to stymie Stelio Mattheos after being set up with a pass to the far side of the net. Manson said Scott deserved his first star designation.

“Scotty made all the saves he was supposed to and some that should end up on the highlight reels.”

Scott held back the desperate Wheat Kings with 14 saves in the final frame. The only shot to beat him was Reid Duke’s high riser into the top corner during a Wheat King power play.

Parker Kelly sealed the victory cutting around Brandon defenseman Kade Jensen and snapped a sizzler into the top corner while in full flight with just over three minutes remaining.

The Raiders who beat the Wheat Kings twice this week, close out the long weekend with a holiday Monday matinee against the Regina Pats at the Art Hauser Centre. The family day game will be alcohol free in the arena and fans will have a chance to skate with the Raiders after the game. Opening face off will be at 4 o’clock. 900 CKBI coverage begins at 3:35.
