Raiders melt ICE in shootout

Feb 11, 2017 | 10:07 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders needed eight rounds of the shootout, but they were able to beat the Kootenay ICE 4-3 Saturday on the road to snap a three-game losing streak. After the contest, the Raiders and ICE are tied for 21st in the WHL rankings with 33 points.

The Raiders’ got the game winning shootout goal from rookie Cole Fonstad. Fonstad scored in the eighth round with a five-hole deke through the wickets of ICE goaltender Payton Lee.

It was one of the only clean attempts throughout the shootout, as shots were fanned and pucks were lost before Fonstad’s attempt.

“Guys were real nervous, pucks were flipping and there was no real control until the end when Fonstad came out. He looked like he knew what he was doing and finished it off for us,” Raiders associate coach Dave Manson said.

Raiders goalie Nicholas Sanders made a glove save on Dallas Hines to seal the deal. Sanders made 34 saves during the game, including robbing Cale Fleury on a breakaway in the third period.

“He made some stops that we needed when the game was on the line,” Manson said. “We’re upset that we gave a point away, but we’re certainly take the two.”

Raiders forward Curtis Miske put the Raiders up 3-2 with just over four minutes left in the game. He also got an assist on Simon Stransky’s goal in the first period. That extends Miske’s point scoring streak to six games, scoring four goals and eight points in that span. Miske now has 16 points in 18 games with the Raiders.

ICE forward Colton Kroeker scored his second goal of the game with 1:17 left in the game to tie it.

Parker Kelly also scored for the Raiders. Vince Loschiavo had a goal and two assists for the ICE.

The Raiders will return home after their three-game road trip this week. They’ll take on the Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday at the Art Hauser Centre before doing battle on Friday against the Everett Silvertips.
