Block parent program proposed for Midtown

Feb 10, 2017 | 1:26 PM

A group of Midtown residents want to help kids feel safer in Prince Albert’s core neighbourhood.

The Prince Albert Midtown Neighbourhood Watch (PAMNW) group wants to bring back the Block Parent Program.

“Back when I was a kid, I remember seeing people in my community having block parent signs and people coming in to schools to talk about it,” PAMNW founder Peter John said.

With the rate of crime rate in the neighbourhood and the large number of kids in the area, John thought a block parent program seems like the perfect fit.

At this time, the idea is still in the early stages. The group’s Facebook page indicates 11 people who have expressed interest in the idea.

On March 2, John plans to host a meeting for anyone who would like to be a block parent. He recognized there might be reasons why people would be hesitant to sign up.

“To be able to go to your neighbour or talk openly or have friendship, it doesn’t happen as much anymore. Again with a place like Midtown with the criminal activity, people become more afraid to step out and they become less trusting,” John said.
