Respected local doctor to be recognized

Feb 8, 2017 | 11:05 AM

Nearly 40 years since he first began seeing patients, Dr. David Stevens will be honoured for his work.

The 63-year-old is the 2017 honouree at this year’s Victoria Hospital Foundation Doctor’s Gala.

He said he was surprised, shocked and even self-conscious when he received word he was nominated.

“[I’m] somewhat embarrassed when I think of the number of physicians around Prince Albert who have contributed a great deal to the community,” he said.

Stevens was recruited to the Victoria Hospital in September of 1990. Originally from Great Britain, he was given the choice of working in North Battleford, Swift Current or P.A.

“I think the fact Prince Albert is slightly a bit bigger than the other two was attractive. The surrounding area with all the lakes was all very attractive too,” he said.

Stevens follows in the footsteps of his father, a pathologist in England. Watching him work played a big role in Stevens’ own career ambitions and his desire to help people.

“I get a lot of satisfaction out of the interaction with people. Many physicians and surgeons do some good but a lot of the interaction is the bedside manners, the way you deal with patients and I sometimes wonder if that part of medicine is on occasion more beneficial than some of the other work we do,” he said.

Stevens would retire in 2015, but made the decision to return to work in September of 2016 and now provides care for patients in the Mamawetan, Churchill River and Kelsey Trail health regions. He and his wife are also longstanding contributors to the Victoria Hospital Foundation.

The Doctor’s Gala will be held April 8, at Plaza 88.
