Moose Jaw’s Levi Steinhauer among Rider releases

The Saskatchewan Roughriders continued their busy off-season by releasing two players and signing two defensive linemen to contracts.

Riders defensive lineman Levi Steinhauer, who hails from Moose Jaw, and defensive back Fred Bennett were released.

Steinhauer has been with the Saskatchewan Roughriders since 2013 when he was drafted by the team in the fifth round. He was primarily used on special teams, where he served as the team’s long-snapper and recorded 18 special teams tackles. He suited up for the Green and White three times in 2016.

Bennett is coming off his first season with the Riders, having played for Calgary since 2012.

Bennett also played for the Houston Texans, San Diego Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals and was on the Arizona Cardinals practice roster before coming to the CFL.

He recorded 22 tackles and one interception during nine games played this past season.

RIDERS INK DEALS FOR BROWN AND LOTT

The team signed national defensive lineman Ivan Brown and international defensive lineman Derrick Lott.

Brown, who is from Regina, signed a deal to remain with the Riders after signing with the team in August. He picked up six special teams tackles, four defensive tackles and a quarterback sack in 13 regular season games.

Brown has played seven seasons in the CFL, with stops in Montreal, Hamilton, Toronto and Winnipeg. He was eligible to become a free agent on Feb. 14.

Lott attended the Oakland Raider’s 2016 training camp and played in three preseason games with the team. He also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2016 off-season and attended training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015.  

The 26-year-old Georgia native played three seasons at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. There he was named a 2014 First Team All-SoCon and played in the 2013 East-West Shrine Game.
