P.A. residents to show support for Muslim community with vigil

Feb 1, 2017 | 1:00 PM

Residents in the Prince Albert area will have an opportunity this week to show support for the Muslim community in the wake of last Sunday’s shootings in Quebec City.

A solidarity vigil is being organized by some students at the First Nations University’s northern campus.

Trevor Dubois said he felt compelled to do something.

“The First Nations University has been very active in social justice movements.  As future leaders, educators and social workers, it’s important for us to be involved and show our support,” he said.

Six men were killed and 19 wounded in the attack at the Quebec capital’s mosque.

Prime Minister Trudeau has referred to the incident as an “act of terrorism.”  A 27-year-old man was arrested and charged with six counts of first degree murder and five counts of attempted murder.

Dubois, who has Muslim friends of his own, said he thought this event would be a good way to spread a positive message.

“Holding these events is a way of acknowledging that not all of us are like that,” he said.

The vigil will be outside city hall in memorial square Thursday night, Feb. 2 and will start at 6 p.m.

He added the event will feature guest speakers and a moment of silence.

Numerous vigils have been held in cities across the country this week, including Regina and Saskatoon.
