Snowfall blankets city

Jan 23, 2017 | 4:00 PM

Prince Albert residents woke up to a blanket of the white stuff as they started their work week.

According to Environment Canada, between eight to 10 cm of snow covered the city starting on Sunday and continued onto Monday with another two cm forecasted to fall in the afternoon. Severe weather specialist John Paul Cragg, said the amount of snow wouldn’t be considered that much.

He said temperatures will begin to drop with a low of -16 Celsius on Wednesday.

“Temperatures will slowly turn to an increase until we get to the weekend of the [Jan.] 28 and 29 where temperatures will be coming close to the freezing mark again,” he said. “It looks like maybe another drop off coming into February. An average high for Prince Albert this time of the year if -12 C and an average low is -25 C. Even with the cool down this week, we are well above that average.”

Lyle Karasiuk, the director of public affairs for Parkland Ambulance, said they haven’t received a lot of calls regarding the latest snowfall and have been mostly dealing with transporting patients from other facilities for other medical reasons.

When there is a big dump of snow, he said they usually do receive more calls from people experiencing chest pains.

“Believe it or not there’s a right way and a wrong way to shovel snow,” he said. “The wrong way is if you simply get out there and you simply start to twist your back and not use your legs to lift. You would rather push all that heavy snow. You have to cognizant of that fact that snow is just like anything else – it is exercise.”

He said anyone who experiences chest pains and shortness of breath should stop what they are doing and rest. If the symptoms don’t go away within a few minutes, Karasiuk suggests going to get some help.
