P.A. landmark up for sale

A piece of broadcast history has been renovated and now is up for sale.

In 1941, CKBI radio set up a transmitter site located seven and a half miles south of Prince Albert on Highway 2. The smaller of the two buildings on the property sheltered the generator, but the larger building actually housed the transmitters.

“At that time, it had adjoining living accommodations,” long time broadcaster Jim Scarrow said. “A transmitter operator needed to be present when the station was broadcasting in the early years from 6 a.m. to sign off at 1 a.m.”

According to the Canadian Communications Foundation, in 1941 CKBI offered a daily bulletin service that reported on the condition of sick people in hospitals to their relatives in outlying areas. The station also broadcast twice a month from the local airport to bring news of the ‘boys’ during the Second World War.

“The building is an historic landmark that everyone is familiar with,” Jesse Honch said, owner of Coldwell Banker Rescom Realty. “The owner looked at rebuilding something more substantial, but after driving by that property every single day for so many years, he felt it was better to restore it rather than knock it down and rebuild.”

The building sat empty for more than ten years before it was renovated. It now offers four bedrooms and three bathrooms over 1,200 square feet both up and down. There is a garage, a large pond and the 40 acres the property is on, is large enough to be divided into two parcels of land. The radio tower which stood tall for decades was torn down before the renovations began.

“The exterior of the home is like a mid-century modern type of style. It is very unique and not something we would typically be seeing for a residence.”

The acreage is currently listed for $329,900.
