P.A. landmark up for sale
A piece of broadcast history has been renovated and now is up for sale.
In 1941, CKBI radio set up a transmitter site located seven and a half miles south of Prince Albert on Highway 2. The smaller of the two buildings on the property sheltered the generator, but the larger building actually housed the transmitters.
“At that time, it had adjoining living accommodations,” long time broadcaster Jim Scarrow said. “A transmitter operator needed to be present when the station was broadcasting in the early years from 6 a.m. to sign off at 1 a.m.”
According to the Canadian Communications Foundation, in 1941 CKBI offered a daily bulletin service that reported on the condition of sick people in hospitals to their relatives in outlying areas. The station also broadcast twice a month from the local airport to bring news of the ‘boys’ during the Second World War.
