Raiders seconds away from dethroning Pats, fall in OT

Jan 14, 2017 | 9:12 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders were 8.5 seconds away from dethroning the Regina Pats, top-ranked major junior hockey club in Canada.

It would have been their first victory since Dec. 28, but Adam Brooks had other ideas in the Pats’ 7-6 overtime victory Saturday in Regina.

The Pats sniper tied the game with 8.5 left at 6-6 to force overtime, then ended it himself just 18 seconds into the extra frame.

That extends the Raiders’ winless streak to nine game (0-6-2-1). Despite not getting the two points, the Raiders did tie their season high for goals with six, equalizing their Nov. 4 output in a 6-0 win over the Kootenay Ice.

“We had six goals today. For us that’s definitely a positive. We had a good effort up and down the lineup,” Raiders associate coach Dave Manson. “We fell a little short, it’s a good learning lesson and hopefully we can come back with the same effort tomorrow.”

Oh yeah, both teams meet again at the Art Hauser Centre on Sunday at an early 4 p.m. start.

The Raiders started out as hot as you possibly can, leading 4-0 after the opening 20 minutes. Raiders rookie Carson Miller had two of those goals himself.

“It was wild, there’s no question about that,” Raiders associate coach Dave Manson said. “We came out and we knew who we were up against. I thought we did a real good job in the first with creating offence but also defending.

“They’re a puck possession team, and I thought we did a real good job in the neutral job where they want to build a lot of their speed.”

Pats affiliate call-up goaltender Kurtis Chapman was making his first WHL career start and surrendered the four goals on 13 Raiders shots. Fellow Pats call-up goalie Max Paddock came in relief as both of the Pats’ regular goaltender, Tyler Brown and Jordan Hollett, are both injured.

The Pats rallied behind Paddock as they scored three goals off the sticks to make it 4-3 into the third period.

“In the second period, that fast goal started the momentum and we kind of sat back and didn’t execute as we did in the first,” Manson said.

Both teams battled in the third and it looked like the Raiders would have been able to hold on as Spencer Moe made it 6-4 with just over 10 minutes remaining.

But Pats forward Jake Leschyshyn made it 6-5 two minutes later, setting up the Brooks heroics late.

Simon Stransky did not dress for the game. He was hit by Red Deer Rebels defenceman Brandon Schuldhaus at his own blueline during Friday’s 4-3 defeat at the Art Hauser Centre.

Manson said that Raiders captain Tim Vanstone will be a game-time decision for the rematch between the Pats and Raiders at the Art Hauser Centre, after Vanstone took a knock in the first period.
