Treaty education and sovereignty forum in P.A. next week

Jan 13, 2017 | 12:03 PM

Indigenous youth and leaders will be getting a few lessons on Treaty 5, 6, 8 and 10 next week.

For Senator James Burns from the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC), the four-day forum is about protecting the treaty rights to education.

Burns said he feels as though treaty rights to education are eroding.

“We’re looking at the future as to how we can stimulate the process of education through our systems,” he said.

Burns among several others will speak at the forum and share ideas on how to benefit the current education system.

The forum is being aimed at leadership, program managers and students between Grade 9 to 12. Burns said he expects students from across the 28 PAGC communities to be in attendance.

Burns said those participating will also be taking a look at the pre-contact history of Indigenous people. There will also be discussions about the policies implemented by the federal government over Canada’s 150-year history in regards to Indians, Indian lands and Indian treaties.”

The forum kicks off at noon on Monday, at the Senator Allen Bird Memorial Centre. Burns said the forum should be completed by Thursday afternoon.

PaNOW will be covering the forum.
